Sonoma Wineries

J Vineyards & Winery
11447 Old Redwood Highway, Healdsburg California 95448; Tel. + 1 888.JWINECO
With its iconic "J" initial gracing every bottle of gorgeous sparkling wines, pear liquors, chardonnays and even pinot noir (the Russian River Valley is known for excellent pinot noirs), J Winery is one of Sonoma's most popular wineries. Cross a bridge over a stream past a wooded entrance and sparkling fountains to enter into J's tasting room. Flights, or tastings, include small, gourmet bites designed to enhance the wine. After the sparkling tasting, venture upstairs for an aquarium view of the winery's industrial production center while sipping pinot and playing witty conversation games laid out on circular tables.

Roshambo Winery
3000 Westside Rd., Healdsburg California 95448; Tel. + 1 707.431.2051
Enter past the dramatic cascade wall fountain and Sonoma's Roshambo (named after the paper-scissors-rocks game) Winery is one of Sonoma's most unpretentious and playful wineries. Wine tastings of RoShambo's uniquely names wines ("Rat" and "Imoan") are free; there is a small $5 fee for reserve wines. Floor to ceiling windows behind the tasting bar frame a spectacular view of Sonoma wine country's rolling hills. Rubber chickens scattered throughout and lowbrow art hung on white walls round out the wine for the masses feel.

Belvedere Winery
4035 Westside Rd., Healdsburg California 95448; Tel. + 1 800.433.8296
An approachable Sonoma winery with a lush, Northern California setting, Belvedere is a Sonoma winery meant to be enjoyed for its scenery in addition to standout zinfandels and cabernets. A crane pond, fountains and picnic tables set amidst the redwoods complete the bucolic experience. The tasting room is a small, intimate space next to a covered patio perfect for sipping a bottle of Belevedere wine while picnicking on staple wine accoutrements like fine cheese, prosciutto and figs.

Gloria Ferrer Winery
23555 Carneros Hwy., Sonoma, California
With nearly 400 acres of grapes surrounding it, Gloria Ferrer is a bit of Catalonia in Sonoma. The first sparkling winery in the Carneros, Ferrer's red tile roof and hacienda architecture harks back to Jose Ferrer's native Spain, where he and his family, owners of the vast multinational Freixenet wine empire, have continued wine traditions dating from the 13th century. more

Gundlach Bundschu Winery
2000 Denmark St., Sonoma, California
The Gundlach Bundschu (pronounced "gun lock bun shoe") features kicked-back, approachable wines. They're not A-list wines for the most part; they're picnic, Superbowl, housewarming wines that are made to enjoy rather than impress. more

Nicholson Ranch Vineyards and Winery
4200 Napa Rd., Sonoma, California
Though the Nicholson Ranch has been around for more than 40 years, and the land farmed for more than 125 years, the winery itself (along with the massive cave it sits on) is less than five years old. The ranch is best known for its Chardonnays, with the '02 Reserve Chardonnay Cuvée Natalie ($45) standing out. more

Ravenswood Winery
18701 Gehricke Rd., Sonoma, California
Give yourself over to the Zinfantastic voyage and feel the love. Ravenswood Zinfandels are exemplary for their varietal, and the winery is among the earliest to bring red Zinfandels--historically used for immigrants' homemade jug wines--to a higher palate. The tasting staff is insanely knowledgeable about their wines and want to help newcomers appreciate and learn the flavors and unique characteristics. more

Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery
389 Fourth St. E., Sonoma, California
In a series of transformations that would make Madonna proud, Sebastiani Winery has weathered a hundred years of winemaking in Sonoma, constantly reinventing its product to satisfy the fickle American wine market. more

Viansa Winery and Italian Marketplace
25200 Arnold Dr., Sonoma, California
Viansa wines are Italian-style blends of mostly Italian varieties of grapes, making for a unique experience in the region. Less formal than other types of wines, many of the reds and whites are wonderful table wines that are made to pair well with foods. more
